Why AI Can’t Replace Your Counsellor

Artificial intelligence is becoming part of everyday life
You can ask AI a question, get information within seconds, brainstorm ideas, and even have a conversation when you’re feeling stuck.
So it’s understandable that people are asking: “Could AI eventually replace counsellors?”
My answer is simple: AI can be a useful tool, but it cannot replace the human connection at the heart of counselling.
Counselling isn’t simply about giving someone information or telling them what to do.
It’s about connection, trust, safety, understanding and relationship.
And there is another important consideration: AI can make mistakes.
Sometimes AI is trying so hard to be quick to give you an answer that it can provide an answer even when the information available to it isn’t enough.
It can misunderstand the context.
It can miss something important.
And sometimes an answer can sound very convincing simply because it is written confidently. Even when it isn’t necessarily the right answer for that person.
That’s particularly important when we’re talking about someone’s emotional wellbeing.
A counsellor doesn’t need to have an immediate answer to everything.
Sometimes the most appropriate response is to pause, ask another question, explore what’s really happening and understand the person in front of them before responding.
That’s a very different process from simply generating an answer.
When you sit with a counsellor, there is also so much more happening than the words being spoken.
- Your facial expressions, your body language
- A counsellor can notice your body language
- Your tone of voice
- The long pause before you answer
- The moment your voice changes, when you talk about something painful.
Sometimes, what a person doesn’t say can be just as important as what they do say
A counsellor is listening to you, not simply processing your words.
And counselling is personal.
There isn’t one perfect response that works for everyone.
• Your history is different
• Your relationships are different
• Your experiences are different
• Your strengths are different
• And your goals are different
A counsellor can work alongside you to understand what is happening and help you discover what may work for you.
The successful outcome is based on the therapeutic relationship between a counsellor and client, allowing one to be vulnerable and honest and feel the respect, trust and safety.
AI can provide information. It can suggest strategies.
It can help you organise your thoughts.
And I believe there can absolutely be a place for technology in supporting wellbeing.
But there is an important difference between information and human connection
AI doesn’t have a lived human experience. It doesn’t experience the emotion in the room.
It doesn’t genuinely feel empathy in the way a human being does. And it cannot replace the feeling of being truly seen, heard and understood by another person.
For me, counselling is about seeing the person beyond the problem, beyond, the challenge.
You are not a diagnosis.
You are not a collection of symptoms.
You are a whole person with a story, strengths, weaknesses, imperfections, challenges, experiences, hopes and potential.
Sometimes you are stuck in the stresses of day-to-day living. Sometimes you are stuck in past conditioning shaped by your environment. Or you may feel overwhelmed by what you are experiencing right now.
And sometimes what someone needs most isn’t another answer.
• They need someone to sit with them
• To listen
• To understand
• To gently challenge them when needed
• To help them see possibilities they couldn’t see for themselves
• And to remind them that their past does not define their future.
So, will AI change counselling?
Absolutely.
Should counsellors understand technology and use it responsibly? I believe so.
But should AI replace counsellors?
No.
Because technology can provide information. It can offer suggestions. It can be a useful tool.
But healing happens through human connection, trust, safety and relationship.
AI can be part of the future of mental health support. But it shouldn’t replace the human being sitting beside you when you need to be heard, supported and be reminded that you are the expert in your life.
**Because sometimes you don’t need another answer.
• You need someone who sees you and understands you**
• Who can help guide you through the decisions, the challenges, the obstacles, the life transitions and the storms with guidance and light
• Who can help you see a life path you never imagined possible
• Help you gain clarity, confidence, heal from the past and step into the future
• Who knows that you have unlimited potential in you
• And empowers you with the skills, tools and techniques to become who you were meant to be.
